The Damas, “Girl Culture” 2002 The damas (maids of honor) in a limousine on the way to a Quinceañera party in Huntington Park, California, for Ruby, 15. Ruby’s parents saved for five years and spent 16 thousand dollars on the traditional Latin American comingof- age celebration. “I wanted my damas to look like little princesses, Cinderella-style. They had their own little crowns. Every girl dreams about being a princess and being pampered. You want to grow into being pretty and loved. I have really mixed feelings about the story of Cinderella. Of course, it’s every girl’s dream to find Prince Charming and marry and have a nice life. But Cinderella can’t do anything for herself. She’s dependent on the fact that Prince Charming’s gonna come and take her, and if it weren’t for him she would probably stay there.” said Ruby.

The most popular girls at school, these friends spent three hours helping each other get ready for the party. Only a few miles from the biggest mall in America, 7th graders here are not worried about gangs or school violence but with being popular and fitting in.
Shelly, “Thin” 2006 Shelly near her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, 6 months after leaving treatment at Renfrew. Following 6 months of residential treatment that she estimates cost 100,000 dollars, she lost 17 pounds and underwent electric shock therapy to treat her depression
Emmanuel, “Kids + Money” 2007 Emanuel, 17, in his bedroom, Los Angeles. He attends the exclusive private school Harvard Westlake and wants to look “rich” like the other kids. He saved up to buy the designer items displayed on his bed when his family could no longer afford to buy luxury goods.

BETHLEHEM, THE CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY: BETHLEHEM BATTLE-May 2002 Palestinians crouch in the Door of Humility for a glimpse of the world outside the sacred Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. The 39-day battle between the Israeli military and Palestinian militia left numerous dead and wounded.
IRAQ: DETAINEES - August 2004 During the battle of Najaf, U.S. Marines watch over Iraqis detained during a raid on a police station in Kufa, a known gathering place for militias. The holy city of Najaf became a battleground as the Al-Sadr's Mahdi Army refused to surrender power to the Iraqi Army.
IRAQ: WAR PAINT - August 2004 A U.S. Marine wears camouflage face paint during the battle for Najaf, Iraq where American forces spent weeks bombing and fighting their way to the city’s holy Imam Ali Shrine, before a negotiated end to the fighting.
SUDAN: DARFUR DAUGHTER- Sept. 2005 Ten-year-old Fatna Adam takes cover from the sun under a small shelter, her family forced from their home in Darfur. Over 2.5 million people have been displaced since the beginning of the conflict, one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
SUDAN: SLA SOLDIERS - Sept. 18, 2004 Sudanese Liberation Army soldiers patrol with their weapons in an area of North Darfur, where they control 80 percent of the territory. Fighting over scarce fertile land is a major cause of the civil conflict.
