On this evening the Annenberg Space for Photography is pleased to offer a lecture by Neil Leifer, one of the two photographers featured in the current exhibit SPORT: Iooss & Leifer.
Neil Leifer's photography career has spanned almost 50 years. Best known for his sports photography, Leifer's images have regularly appeared in every major national magazine, including the Saturday Evening Post, Look, LIFE, Newsweek, People and, most often, TIME Magazine and Sports Illustrated. Leifer has photographed 15 Olympic Games, 4 World Cup soccer tournaments, 17 Kentucky Derbies, 15 Masters golf tournaments, countless World Series games, 13 Super Bowls, and every important heavyweight title fight since 1960. Leifer photographed his favorite subject, Muhammad Ali, on at least 70 separate occasions, including 35 fights.
Leifer has published 15 books. The most recent two, Ballet in the Dirt: The Golden Age of Baseball (2007) and Guts and Glory: The Golden Age of American Football 1958-1978 (2008) were both published by Taschen, and are already considered classics.
Leifer is now a full-time filmmaker. He has produced and/or directed two features, five documentaries and eight short films.
During this IRIS Nights presentation, Leifer will share experiences from his illustrious career, as well as the magic of his images.
