Facing Water Crisis An Evening with Photojournalist Balazs Gardi

Thursday, April 8, 6:30-8:00pm
Independent photographer, Balazs Gardi captures stories about marginalized communities in desperate situations. He spends time with people living in the harsh conditions of slums and refugee camps overpopulated as a result of natural disasters, war and other crises, which are often under-represented in the mainstream media.
Gardi spent two years in Eastern Europe, documenting Roma (gypsy) minorities facing growing poverty, declining social status and appalling living conditions. He regularly travels to Afghanistan and Pakistan to photograph life in a region in a state of insecurity and violence that is dragging these countries back to open warfare.
In recent years, his attention has turned to reporting on harbingers of the global water crisis. This has evolved into "Facing Water Crisis," a project detailing the strategic value of water worldwide, and the issues surrounding access to this vital resource. It features an expanding series of individual stories about what Gardi argues is the most life-threatening environmental crisis mankind has ever faced, highlighting the most affected regions around the world.

We'd also like to bring your attention to another local event centering on water. On Monday, April 19, the Zócalo Public Square lecture series will feature a presentation by journalist Steven Solomon. Solomon's talk, "Is Water the New Oil?" will examine how the scarcity of this resource is creating crises normally affiliated with the struggle for oil -- genocide, the collapse of states and the threat of new wars.
