"PHOTOGRAPHING A SHRINKING WORLD"
With Award-Winning Photographer Michael Robinson Chávez
Thursday, August 20th, 6:30-8:00pm
On Saturday, July 25th, we had a wonderful start to the POYi IRIS Nights Free Lecture Series with our first speaker, Steve McCurry (picture at left). Our next lectures, David Burnett (August 6th) and Dan Winters (August 13th) are already fully booked! On August 20th we are very pleased to welcome Michael Robinson Chávez. Be sure to make your reservation now to hear him share his experiences taking photographs locally and abroad, and discuss the connection between stories and people. In his lecture "Photographing a Shrinking World" Robinson will present his photographs from the last 15 years, including coverage of the civil war in Congo, conflict in the Middle East, his street photography in Peru and India, and a current project on south central Los Angeles. He will cover the reasons why he undertook certain assignments, how he was able to gain access and his process of telling stories through image-making.
Chávez has been a photographer at The Los Angeles Times since 2007. Prior to that, he worked for The Washington Post, The Boston Globe and the Associated Press. In addition to photographing local stories, he has covered wide-ranging international assignments in over 45 countries.
Chávez won the Scripps Howard Foundation Award for Photojournalism in 2008. He has twice been named Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers' Association in 2004 and 2007 and received an Award of Excellence as Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 2008 by Pictures of the Year International.
He has recently published a book of his photographs from Peru: "Awaiting the Rain," and a book about Dharavi, Bombay's largest slum.
