An Evening with Photographer Gillian Laub

Gillian Laub approaches photography like an anthropologist with a camera. She began photographing her family ten years ago as a student at the International Center of Photography. Through her intimate and engaging portraits Gillian continued exploring enclaves in America that fascinated her, such as beauty pageants and the debutante culture. Her passions for visual storytelling led her to Israel in 2002, during the Second Intifada.

Laub spent the next four years photographing and collecting testimonies from Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs and Palestinians affected by the complicated, geopolitical context in which they live. This work, published by Aperture, is entitled "Testimony," and is widely exhibited in many publications and commissions.

For her lecture, Laub will be discussing her approach to her subjects and the genesis of her projects. Whether she is commissioned to photograph a celebrity, political figure or a conflict zone, she has the uncanny ability to inject intimacy that is deeply revealing. Laub will also be talking about her new project, which is focused on racially-segregated school dances in Georgia, a longstanding tradition the school ended after the article was published. Yet, they continued holding segregated proms, which is the impetus for Laub's continued coverage.

In response to requests from our guests, we are releasing tickets at two separate times; today (Monday, October 5) at noon and tomorrow morning (Tuesday, October 6), at 9:30am.
