2002 Alli, Annie, Hannah, and Berit, all 13, dressed up before the first big party of the seventh grade in Edina, an affluent suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The most popular girls at school, these friends spent three hours helping each other get ready for the party. Only a few miles from the biggest mall in America, 7th graders here are not worried about gangs or school violence but with being popular and fitting in.

2006 Shelly near her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, 6 months after leaving treatment at Renfrew. Following 6 months of residential treatment that she estimates cost 100,000 dollars, she lost 17 pounds and underwent electric shock therapy to treat her depression

1953, Italian immigrant Simon Rodia poses with his artistic creation, popularly known as the Watts Towers, in the background. Rodia single-handedly created the artwork over a period of 34 years on a triangle lot at 1761-1765 East 107th Street in Los Angeles.
