The Honest Man
To Martine Roch, it’s not complicated. She purchases antique photographs. Sometimes they’re daguerreotypes, which generally feature subjects from 1840 to 1860. Sometimes they’re tintypes, which generally feature subjects from 1860 to 1900.
Roch looks at their faces and muses what they might have been like. She allows their bodies and demeanor to suggest an animal. She doesn’t second-guess herself. When she comes to a decision, she searches through her bank of animal photographs.
Roch loves animals, and takes a lot of photographs of them with no thought as to what she’s going to do with them later. When she needs an animal image, she goes through her collection and looks for the right facial expression and appearance, as a fashion
